Davner is a prior authorization service for imaging centers and radiology groups. It reviews the ordering provider’s notes, checks each payer’s criteria for the ordered study, submits through the right channel (portal, fax, phone, or clearinghouse), follows up until there’s a decision, and supports denials and appeals. Practices send cases through their EHR, secure upload, fax, or email.

The problem

Why imaging authorizations stall

Most delays aren’t about medical necessity. They come from gaps between what the order says and what the payer needs to see.

The order doesn’t answer the payer’s questions

Imaging teams rarely write the note the payer reviews. If the ordering provider’s note doesn’t document conservative care or exam findings, the request stalls and the scan gets rescheduled.

Scan dates run up against payer clocks

When a date of service is within three business days, Davner marks the case STAT automatically and moves it to the front of the queue. Staff can also mark any case STAT themselves.

Approvals don’t reach the scheduler

An approval only protects the appointment if the imaging center has it before the patient arrives. Davner automatically faxes the result to the ordering provider, rendering provider, and facility when their fax numbers are on file.

What we authorize

Imaging services we authorize

Published policy is only half of it. Davner checks each request against the questions the payer actually asks, before it goes out.

MRI

Symptoms and exam findings that justify the study, results of earlier imaging such as X-rays, and often a period of failed conservative care for spine and musculoskeletal studies.

CT and CT angiography

A clinical indication that matches the payer’s criteria for the body part, prior results when the CT follows other imaging, and a contrast choice that fits the clinical question.

PET and PET/CT

A confirmed or strongly suspected cancer, where the patient is in treatment (initial staging or restaging), and how the result will change management.

Co-founded by a practicing spine surgeon

Davner was co-founded by Matthew Gornet, MD, a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon at The Orthopedic Center of St. Louis who orders advanced imaging as part of his practice. Our imaging workflows are shaped by a surgeon’s view of what payers ask for, and how an order should answer it.

FAQs

Imaging prior authorization questions

Which imaging studies require prior authorization?

It depends on the payer and plan, but MRI, CT, CT angiography, and PET commonly require prior authorization, while X-rays and most ultrasound usually don’t. Davner checks each request against the specific payer’s requirements.

How does Davner handle orders with missing clinical notes?

Davner identifies what the payer needs from the ordering provider’s notes and flags gaps before the request is submitted, so your team knows exactly what to ask the referring office for.

Can Davner help with peer-to-peers and appeals?

Yes. Davner automatically appeals denials based on an invalid or incorrect reason. If a denial can only be overturned through a peer-to-peer, your practice arranges it, and Davner provides the denial reason and a justification to use.

Do we need an EHR integration to get started?

No. Teams can share orders and clinical documents by secure upload, fax, or email. Davner also integrates with many EHRs, including Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, and NextGen.

How much work is left for our staff?

Very little. Davner takes the prior authorization work off your team’s plate. Staff upload the order and clinical records and verify the details Davner fills in; Davner handles submission, follow-up, and the payer back-and-forth from there.

Will we lose visibility into our prior authorizations?

No, you gain it. Every request shows its current status, payer updates, and call transcripts, and your team can comment on a request at any time to ask a question or share a change.

Who on our team can start a request?

Anyone. A scheduler, front-desk coordinator, or authorization specialist can start a request as soon as the order arrives, so nothing waits on a single person.

Is Davner HIPAA compliant?

Yes. Davner is HIPAA and SOC 2 compliant, a BAA is available, and data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
