Davner for behavioral health
Behavioral health prior auth, done for you.
Davner handles authorizations for TMS, Spravato, and intensive outpatient programs from submission to approval, so patients can start care sooner.
Davner is a prior authorization service for behavioral health practices, including TMS and Spravato clinics. It reviews the clinical notes and treatment history, checks each payer’s criteria for the ordered treatment, submits through the right channel (portal, fax, phone, or clearinghouse), follows up until there’s a decision, and supports denials and appeals. Practices send cases through their EHR, secure upload, fax, or email.

Why behavioral health authorizations stall
Most delays aren’t about medical necessity. They come from gaps between what the chart says and what the payer needs to see.
The chart doesn’t answer the payer’s questions
A TMS or Spravato request asks whether each antidepressant trial reached an adequate dose and duration. If the note only says “failed several SSRIs,” someone has to reconstruct the doses and dates, or the request stalls.
Continued treatment runs into the end of an authorization
TMS sessions, Spravato maintenance, and IOP stays are approved for a set number of treatments or days. When a date of service is within three business days, Davner marks the case STAT automatically, and staff can mark any case STAT themselves.
Schedules change mid-course
A patient misses sessions or switches plans, and the approved dates no longer match the schedule. Your team adds the change to the request, and Davner works from the update.
Behavioral health services we authorize
Published policy is only half of it. Davner checks each request against the questions the payer actually asks, before it goes out.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
A diagnosis of major depressive disorder, documented failure of multiple antidepressant trials at an adequate dose and duration, a trial of psychotherapy, current rating-scale scores, and no contraindications such as implanted metal or a seizure history.
90867 · 90868 · 90869
Spravato (esketamine)
Treatment-resistant depression after at least two antidepressant trials in the current episode, an ongoing oral antidepressant, and a REMS-certified setting with post-dose monitoring. Continued treatment needs documented response.
G2082 · G2083 · S0013
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP)
Symptoms that need more support than weekly therapy but not 24-hour care, a treatment plan with measurable goals, and the ability to attend several hours a day, several days a week. Many plans apply ASAM criteria to substance use programs, and continued stays need documented progress.

Behavioral health prior authorization questions
Do TMS and Spravato require prior authorization?
Usually. Most commercial and Medicare Advantage plans require prior authorization for both, and their criteria differ. Davner checks each request against the specific plan’s requirements.
How does Davner document failed antidepressant trials?
Davner reviews the chart for each trial the payer asks about, including the medication, dose, duration, and reason it was stopped, and flags gaps before the request is submitted.
Can Davner handle authorizations for continued treatment?
Yes. Continued TMS sessions, Spravato maintenance, and IOP continued stays need a new authorization with documented progress. Davner submits them like any other request, and cases with an approaching date of service are flagged STAT automatically.
Do we need an EHR integration to get started?
No. Teams can share case details and clinical documents by secure upload, fax, or email. Davner also integrates with many EHRs, including athenahealth, AdvancedMD, Tebra, and Healthie.
Can Davner help with peer-to-peers and appeals?
Yes. Davner automatically appeals denials based on an invalid or incorrect reason. If a denial can only be overturned through a peer-to-peer, your practice arranges it, and Davner provides the denial reason and a justification to use.
How much work is left for our staff?
Very little. Davner takes the prior authorization work off your team’s plate. Staff upload the clinical records and verify the details Davner fills in; Davner handles submission, follow-up, and the payer back-and-forth from there.
Will we lose visibility into our prior authorizations?
No, you gain it. Every request shows its current status, payer updates, and call transcripts, and your team can comment on a request at any time to ask a question or share a change.
Who on our team can start a request?
Anyone. A psychiatrist, nurse, front-desk coordinator, or authorization specialist can start a request as soon as treatment is recommended, so nothing waits on a single person.
Is Davner HIPAA compliant?
Yes. Davner is HIPAA and SOC 2 compliant, a BAA is available, and data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
