Davner for orthopedics
Orthopedic prior auth, done for you.
Davner handles authorizations for MRIs, injections, and surgeries from submission to approval, so your surgeons’ schedules don’t wait on payers.
Davner is a prior authorization service for orthopedic practices. It reviews the clinical notes, checks each payer’s criteria for the ordered procedure, submits through the right channel (portal, fax, phone, or clearinghouse), follows up until there’s a decision, and supports denials and appeals. Practices send cases through their EHR, secure upload, fax, or email.

Why orthopedic authorizations stall
Most delays aren’t about medical necessity. They come from gaps between what the chart says and what the payer needs to see.
The chart doesn’t answer the payer’s questions
Exam findings and conservative care dates can be missing or unclear. Davner checks the record and flags gaps before submission.
Surgery dates approach while requests wait
Pending authorizations put surgery schedules at risk. Davner follows up with payers and prioritizes cases with approaching service dates.
Authorizations get lost between teams
Outside imaging, changed plans, and missed approvals create gaps. Davner works from your updates and sends results to the providers and facility.
Orthopedic services we authorize
Published policy is only half of it. Davner checks each request against the questions the payer actually asks, before it goes out.
Advanced imaging
X-rays first, specific exam findings, and often a set period of failed conservative care, commonly around six weeks.
73221 · 73721 · 72141 · 72148
Joint replacement
Imaging showing arthritis, failed conservative treatment, and documented functional limitation. Some plans add BMI, A1c, or smoking criteria.
27130 · 27447 · 23472
Spine surgery
Neurological findings that correlate with imaging and a documented conservative-care history, sometimes with additional fusion-specific criteria.

Arthroscopy
Mechanical symptoms or exam findings, supporting imaging, and conservative care.

Injections and interventional pain
Frequency limits, documented relief from prior injections, and diagnostic blocks before ablation.

Orthopedic prior authorization questions
What orthopedic procedures require prior authorization?
It depends on the payer and plan, but advanced imaging (MRI and CT), joint replacement, spine surgery, arthroscopy, and interventional pain procedures such as epidural steroid injections and radiofrequency ablation commonly require prior authorization. Davner checks each request against the specific payer’s requirements.
How does Davner handle conservative treatment requirements?
Davner reviews the chart for the conservative care the payer requires, such as physical therapy, medications, and prior injections, including dates and durations, and flags gaps before the request is submitted.
Can Davner help with peer-to-peers and appeals?
Yes. Davner automatically appeals denials based on an invalid or incorrect reason. If a denial can only be overturned through a peer-to-peer, your practice arranges it, and Davner provides the denial reason and a justification to use.
Do we need an EHR integration to get started?
No. Teams can share case details and clinical documents by secure upload, fax, or email. Davner also integrates with EHRs common in orthopedics, including ModMed, athenahealth, Epic, and NextGen.
How much work is left for our staff?
Very little. Davner takes the prior authorization work off your team’s plate. Staff upload the clinical records and verify the details Davner fills in; Davner handles submission, follow-up, and the payer back-and-forth from there.
Will we lose visibility into our prior authorizations?
No, you gain it. Every request shows its current status, payer updates, and call transcripts, and your team can comment on a request at any time to ask a question or share a change.
Who on our team can start a request?
Anyone. A surgeon’s assistant, scheduler, or authorization coordinator can start a request as soon as the order is placed, so nothing waits on a single person.
Is Davner HIPAA compliant?
Yes. Davner is HIPAA and SOC 2 compliant, a BAA is available, and data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
